Thallophytes

Thallophyta is the first division plant group in plant kingdom. Algae and Fungi are placed under the division thallophyta. According to some authors slime moulds, lichens and bacteria are included under the division thallophyta.

Main features of the division Thallophyta

Plant body cannot differentiated into stem, leaves and roots.
Mostly they possess single celled (unicellular) type of reproductive cells. In some algae (brown algae) multicellular reproductive organs occur, but all the cells of such cells of multicellular organs are fertile except antheridium of Charophyceae.
Zygot generally does not develop into multicellular embryo while still enclosed within the female reproductive structure.
There is diversity in thallus structure in algae, ranging from the microscopic multicellular habit to the giant macroscopic seaweeds which may be over 100 meters long.
